On 15/10/2020 students from Arsakeio Lyceum of Patras learned how to operate a small hydroponic unit that combines Chemistry (production of nutrient broth for the growth of plants without soil), Physics (utilization of natural sunlight) and Biology (study of plant growth parameters such as pH and electrical conductivity) and highlights the interdisciplinary approach that students should take to teaching Science for sustainable growth.
The advantages of hydroponics include increased yields, improved product quality compared to conventional cultivation, complete production control, reduction of over-fertilization, reduction of production costs and minimization of the effects on the environment, since no herbicides and chemical soil disinfectants are now used.
